Song Revelations

"I can do this on my own,
blood and sweat and tears alone,
build my castle to the clouds,
but in time it comes crashing down."
The lyrics above are from the song Crashing Down by Bristol of which I have recently discovered on Soundcloud the other day. As I was listening to these words being sung, I thought of a passage from Matthew: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”(Matthew 7:24-27).
Jesus used this analogy as a way for us to better understand that our lives are meant to be built upon faith through Christ and not upon worldly things. There are times when we think we can do things on our own, where we don't need anyone's help. We start to build up our lives relying fully on our own strength, but when we do that, it only winds up later crashing down. But if we build a foundation upon Christ, we can build anything we want as long as it's through Christ.
It amazes me how many times we continue to want to do things on our own and every time we come back to the same result, nothing. Why do we continue to do things on our own? I know for some people it's mainly to do with pride. I myself struggle with pride in so many ways: through school work and even my musical talents. I tend to think that I can do all these things on my own with repetition, learning, and competence, but I wind up screwing up along the way. For others, it's relying on worldly things such as money, friends, or alcohol. They build their lives around these things, hoping they'll bring some fulfillment and joy to their lives, but they'll come to find that they are only left feeling empty, wanting something more. Centering your life around such worldly things will wind up letting you down and you'll start to wonder why you're feeling this way. That's because we were made to live a life for God, not for this world. Only through Christ Jesus do we find true life-fulfilling joy, and through him all things are possible,"Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."(Matthew 19:26).
Sometimes it isn't until we fall apart that we finally turn to God for help, and through him we can then start to build a solid foundation. I know it's a struggle to continually remind ourselves to rely fully on God rather than our own strength. It requires a lot of patience and faith to believe and trust that God will be there to help you and to build you up. To build a upon a rock is to build up your life upon a firm faith, meaning that you firmly stand with Christ and do not let the things of this world tear you down. I know it can be extremely hard at times, but constantly reminding ourselves of how great God is helps to keep that foundation strong. So do not ever be discouraged if you feel like you're struggling, and know that God is with you and he will never forsake you, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."(Deuteronomy 31:6).
God is greater than anything, everything, and all that we can imagine. Why do we ever rely on our own strength when His is infinitely greater than our own strength? That's a question I come across whenever I get caught up in doing things on my own, and I have to remind myself to let go and let God take control of my life.
So if I want you to take anything away from this, I would say to remember to not let our own selfish pride get in the way of the life that you're building. Let God step in and build you a life worth living. God bless!
