Thoughts from Songs

“Where were you when everything was falling apart. All my days were spent by the telephone that never rang and all I needed was a call that never came.”-The Fray
It’s the question that everyone seems to ask along their journey through life, the question that seems to haunt every mind. Why weren’t you there? Where were you?
But the truth is, He was right there all along. God was there all along. We just got too tangled up in our own lives, our own thoughts, our own selfish desires that we forgot to give our focus and attention to God.
He was there all along and is still here and will never leave our side. Sometimes we forget that. Like when Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water beside Jesus. When the wind came, he was distracted and let fear take over. And when that fear took over, he forgot who he was standing right next to, who was right there beside him. “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:30-31.
Why did Peter doubt? He was afraid of the wind, afraid of sinking into the water. In our world today many of us become like Peter. We become distracted by our own kind of wind. Whether it’s worrying about our looks, popularity, our grades, what career path we want to take, who are true friends are, how much money we have, telling the best stories and jokes so people will like us. Or even deeper things like losing a loved one, finding out you have depression, anxiety, cancer. Maybe you soak yourself in alcohol or drugs to distract yourself from life’s painful reality. Either way, we are all the same. We let these things distract us and take our eyes off the path, away from God. And even if it’s for just one second, that one second is all it takes to steer us off the narrow path and onto an open field off endless wandering and endless worrying and endless loneliness.
Peter cried out to Jesus to save him, for he was scared. But when you have the Lord with you by your side, should you be scared? The answer is no, that’s why Jesus said to Peter, “Why did you doubt”?  Matthew 14:31. Because Jesus was right there the whole time, and with Him, you never have to worry again. After all, He can make mountains move, He can heal the sick, make little amounts of fish and bread more than enough for a crowd of thousands, cast out demons, raise the dead, and raise himself from the dead. So what is there to fear? Nothing, but the Lord your God. For it is written, “Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.” Deuteronomy 6:13.
Going back to the song “You Found Me”, God didn’t find you, He was there all along. It was you who finally remembered that He was there with you all along.
So if you’re ever in a crisis, a terrible state of mind, in trouble, lost and afraid, lonely, just remember that God is always there with you, and with him you can do anything through Him. For it is written,” With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26.
And one last thing. If you should remember one thing from this, remember this.
Let go, and Let God.
And for The Fray, I was not in any way at all making any accusations towards the song or the band. I love The Fray and You Found Me is one of my favorite songs of all time! And I thank you for your song for giving me the idea for this piece.
